Finders chooses its charities of the year

Finders International has chosen its two charities of the year – Young Minds and Age UK.

Young Minds’ purpose is to stop young people’s mental health reaching crisis point. The organisation works towards ensuring all young people can get the mental health support they need, when they need it, no matter what.

Mental health is a big issue for young people, the charity says. The stats show:

  • 1 in 8 children have a diagnosable mental health disorder – that’s roughly 3 children in every classroom
  • 1 in 6 young people aged 16-24 has symptoms of a common mental disorder such as depression or an anxiety disorder (
  • Half of all mental health problems manifest by the age of 14, with 75 percent by age 24
  • In 2017, suicide was the most common cause of death for both boys (16.2 percent of all deaths) and girls (13.3 percent) aged between 5 and 19
  • Nearly half of 17-19-year-olds with a diagnosable mental health disorder has self-harmed or attempted suicide at some point, rising to 52.7 percent for young women.

Support for schools and professionals

The charity’s website has a large resource library where professionals and young people can access booklets and leaflets, support materials for schools and more.

Age UK exists to help older people when they need it the most. They:

  • Provide information and advice, helping millions of people know their rights and make the best choices for later life
  • Put people in control of the care they receive, while sharing best practice to improve services
  • Tackle loneliness, getting older people active, and supporting people to stay independent for longer.
  • Run campaigns and conduct research to help make later life better for older people today and tomorrow
  • Through its network of local centres, they offer vital community support by providing unrestricted income, helping the network raise money, and working together to improve quality.

Finders International will be running activities throughout the year to help raise money for both causes but will also donate money through the feedback forms used for each event Finders runs. Every completed form will result in the donation of £1 to each of the charities.

On board with the vision

Danny Curran, Finders International’s CEO and founder, said: “This year, we want to support people at both ends of the life spectrum. Mental health is a real issue for young people these days, and we’re very much on board with Young Minds’ vision to ensure those who need help get it.

“Age UK is another important issue. We have many Dementia Friends within the organisation, so choosing Age UK as our other charity partner complements that work. We’re looking forward to organising some fun fundraising events in 2021.”
